The Creation

Hebrew Bible

In the beginning, God created the sky and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and there was darkness over the depths. And God’s spirit hovered on the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. Evening and morning came: the first day.
God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters, to divide the waters above from the waters below,” and it was so. God called the vault Sky. Evening and morning came: the second day.

God made the great light to rule the day, and the little light to rule the night, and the stars also.

God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky be gathered together in one place, and let dry land appear,” and it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the gathered waters he called Sea, and God saw that it was good. And God said, “Let there be grass, and herbs bearing seed, and fruit trees upon the earth,” and it was so. The earth brought forth grass, and herbs bearing seed, and fruit trees, and God saw that it was good. Evening and morning came: the third day.

God said, “Let there be lights in the sky to divide the day from night, to mark the seasons and the years,” and it was so. God made the great light to rule the day, and the little light to rule the night, and the stars also. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light to the earth, and God saw that it was good. Evening and morning came: the fourth day.

God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living things, and birds that fly in the skies above the earth.” And God created great sea-creatures, and swarms of creatures from the waters, and every winged bird, and God saw that it was good. Evening and morning came: the fifth day.

God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures: beasts, and crawling things, and land animals,” and it was so. And God said, “Let us make man in our image, like us, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and the birds of the air, and the beasts of the earth, and the crawling things.” So God created man in his own image, male and female.

God blessed them, and said to them, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and make it serve you: rule over the fish of the sea, and the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves on the earth. I have given you every herb bearing seed, and every tree bearing fruit, to be food for you.” And God saw everything that he had made, and it was very good. Evening and morning came: the sixth day.

So the skies and the earth were made. And on the seventh day God finished his work, and he rested.
